Add another frustrated socketeer.
Didn't have this problem since the recent minor QR patch. Every 10 minutes here, 40 minutes there...I believe it occurred 5 times last night alone.
The only benefit to "The Socket Was Closed" is I can occasionally stay connected long enough to scan down a system and scoop all the T2 drones of other players who've gotten Socketed and Disco'd by CCP. So, thanks fellas.
However, after reading the thread, it's nice to know I'm not alone with getting Socketed.
FWIW, I'm on Verizon FIOS, US Eastern Standard Time.

Originally by: Buckaroo Kamakazee I am convinced that a lot of the issues is with the connection routing through Level3 hops. I was seeing huge issues with packet loss and flat out crashing on an unkonwn.Level3.net hop. CCP was claiming that this was not the issue and I need to deal with my ISP. So, I went to my ISP, they researched the whole 18 hop route. They then changed my route to a new 14 hop one that bypassed the Level3 hops. Guess what? I haven't been dc'd since. This is going on 3 weeks now. So, run pingplotter and see if you are hoping through Level3.
I'm going to give that a try; I have 11 hops to the server, and the 10th is an unidentifiable with a 100% packet loss. I'll see if Verizon FIOS can work any magic.

Originally by: UVPhoenix2 This began happening to me just a couple days ago. It's definitely a routing issue who's origin lies within the Level 3 network. The L3 Cleveland hop has a real high latency and the hop right before Tranquility doesn't even respond.
These sorts of issues with Level 3 tend to sort themselves out not too long after they appear. I'm more concerned about that last hop before Tranquility, as it's likely whats causing so many of us this closed socket issue.
Yes, after 15 pages--the most recent ones highlighting multiple pinplotter data identifying the hop right before the Tranquility server as the primary issue--various players from across the globe have the same problem, and the single common denominator is the hop before the server...So, how do we get CCP to acknowledge it?
And no, I don't think cancelling a subscription is going to do it.
There's got to be another way. Wait it out, perhaps?

Edited by: Cyclicus Remba on 18/02/2009 04:23:36 I'm really getting fed up with this crap. This is costing us actual money. Drones, implants, getting killed....I'm going to set a nice long skill, and take a break from EVE. Maybe the Bjorktards in Iceland can get their act together by then.

Originally by: Kane Starkiller People, seriously give this a try! If you have pingplotter set it to trace the eve server at 1 second intervals the whole time eve is on. You will not get a disconnect. Never! I'm not an expert but I know it works. It may not be a solution but it certainly patches up the problem for now. At least you can play normally.
Your bailwire and bubblegum solution is a big bag of fail. I got socketed twice within the hour.

I got dropped 3 times with 25 minutes, then tried this and have been fine since (3+ hours). Of course, there's no way for me to verify that this program helps at all, but meh, I'll use it till my "luck" runs out.
Sometimes I'll get socketed 3 times in an hour, sometimes once in 3 hours, sometimes not for 5 hours. Still doesn't change the fact that the hop before the server is essentially dead, regardless of how long pingplotter is running.
Maybe I'll try it while wearing a pink carnation, pasties and wingtips while humming Marche Slave. It just might work! I'll let you know how it goes.

Nah. This is much more fun. Gives me something to do while I'm disconnected. Yarr.

Erinni,
I applaud your attempts to get CCP's attention, but you do realize nothing will be done about it, right?

Originally by: Johren I finally sent an in game petition - not that they'll necessarily respond, but still.
They won't. It's not a "bug", so all you can do is hope that the ISP provider for those hops notices something.

25%-65% packet loss at telecity's hop, and 100% packet loss at hop 10, which is so screwed up PingPlotter can't even get info on it. Maybe someone can call Hong Kong, where telecity's registered. HERRO?
Thanks for looking out for your paying customers, CCP.

I think since CCP can't/won't address this issue (after all, look at their participation in this thread), our only hope is that when Apocrypha is released, it takes such a major wet steaming dump because of this, they'll have no recourse but to address it.
Personally, I like the odds. After all, these are the same magicians that overwrote peoples' boot.ini files with Empyrean Age, remember?

OK, so who do we get to write the nastygram to Telecity? Somebody link them to this thread, or bombard them with out PingPlotter results.
Typical English. Probably have the server on the wrong side of the road.

Those of you in the UK may be SOL, but the rest of us may be able to deal with this issue.
I tried to go that route with my own ISP with Verizon FIOS Level 3 Tech Support; as it is considered an "international connectivity issue", they will not research alternative routes to the EVE server.
So, if anyone's on Verizon FIOS, forget trying to get them to research a different hop path that skips Telecity. Apparently international protocol is involved.
Next stop: contacting Telecity directly.

You'd think though that if they are about to release something (expansion and boxed version) that will inevitably have a large initial influx that CCP would be concerned about some as basic and serious as a major routing problem between them and their customers.
I'm just saying is all...
If it takes Apocrypha to have such a bloody dump to get those Icelanders out of their igloos to notice their ISP, then let's hope Apocrypha is a bigger bust than when they overwrote people's boot.ini files.

Still getting lost packets in the 50%-75% range at the pccwbtn hop, but at least the 10 hop is no longer a 100% wall of fail. We'll see how it does tonight.

You do realize some routers are configured not to respond to ICMP packets, right?
Anyway, blame LINX.
I blame you.

Pretty much.
You all need to get with the program, and realize that this issue will NOT be addressed by CCP. So, you can do one of three things:
1--Deal with it; 2--Ragequit, or; 3--Fly to Iceland for FanFest and punch someone in the face.
Either way, you need to come to the realization that CCP doesn't consider this "their" issue, so stop whining. God knows I have.
